We all love our cup of joe. It gives us that energy boost early in the morning. It can also give us that comfort during winter and rainy days. Coffee just makes everything better. And sometimes our love for coffee takes us to some extent. As we age, coffee may not be the best morning booster that is recommended for us.
Several studies have been conducted regarding the issue whether coffee is good for the senior adults. The good news is, coffee can still be helpful to us as long as we drink it in moderation. Today, we will talk about coffee and aging in our Residential Care Center in Ivy Grove SC, Harmony Residential Care Center.

Here are three of the surprising things that your coffee can do to your body:

  • It dehydrates your body

Dehydration is synonymous to dry skin and insufficient moisture to give you that glow and moisture. Having not enough water in our body is a serious matter. It impedes the body from doing its normal function.

At first, the symptoms of dehydration may just be dry skin and constant thirstiness. But if these symptoms will not be given immediate action, it could lead to constipation which is not a good thing for senior adults.

  • Chronic coffee drinkers are less likely to feel inflammation

Apart from dehydration, there are no known bad effects of coffee to senior adults’ health. Instead, drinking coffee decreases the risk of having inflammation. The common health problems affecting seniors like diabetes, Alzheimer’s disease, heart problems, and hypertension are caused by inflammation of the different parts of the body.

Drinking coffee can reduce inflammation because it is a natural antioxidant that cleanses the body from toxins and oxidative stress that we encounter in our daily lives.

  • Drinking more than two cups of joe a day may forfeit the health benefits of coffee

When it comes to coffee, there is such thing as having too much of it. At some point of every coffee lover’s lives, they will reach a certain point of caffeine addiction that they can drink up to six cups of coffee. Reaching this insane amount is not good for the health anymore.

Coffee is a diuretic which means it can heavily dehydrate the body especially when it is consumed in great amounts. Hence, it is advisable to drink at least two cups of coffee a day only. This is especially true for senior adults because their body might not be able to take caffeine overload.

How would you want to spend your retirement years? How do you imagine your senior life to be? Probably, you would want to spend your days somewhere far from the city or near the mountains where you can feel fresh and cool air daily. Some people would want to spend their days with their family and their grandchildren. We all have our different ideas when it comes to aging and retirement.

Human as we are, we are all similar when it comes to the need for companionship. We long to have someone who can rely on and someone who can be with us as we grow old. This need for companionship can be found from our own family members or having a personal caregiver from our Residential Care Center in Ware Shoals Manor SC, Harmony Residential Care Center.

Our companionship services do not limit to giving the patient the medical care they need but we go beyond that. We ensure comfort and we establish a friendship with our patients.

How do we make companionship fun?

The caregiver and patient relationship are not purely platonic. As caregivers, we create a daily routine for our patient. Apart from ensuring that they receive proper personal grooming and eat healthy meals, we also try to make each day exciting for them by helping them with their hobbies.

It would be great if we ask our patients about their favorite past time activities. Perhaps, they would occasionally want a stroll in the nearby park or they love to do gardening. You can also arrange a get together with the patient’s friends on an afternoon high tea where they can talk and spend time together.

How should we approach the patient?

What makes our Residential Care Center in Ware Shoals Manor SC dependable is that we treat our patient like our own family. We do not just treat them as a patient who needs our assistance.

We make sure to ask them about their day, make small conversations about their favorites or the stories they would like to share. We get to know them on a personal level. In this manner, we will be able to understand them as well. It helps us adjust to their personalities as well so that we will be more effective in rendering service to them.

Moreover, it would also be good that we treat them kindly no matter how they treat us. There are some patients who can be a handful or some who throw tantrums. When we are faced with this kind of situation, the best that we can do is to be patient and understand them. We keep our cool and then we talk to them. Ask them what the problem is and find a good solution to the dilemma without being harsh to the patient.

Caregiving and companionship is a noble profession. Having mastered the skills in conducting medical assistance or personal care to patients is not enough, you have to be compassionate when it comes to your treatment to the patient to make caregiving more effective.

If you are looking for a caregiver and a companion this Father’s day, contact us at www.harmonyres.com or call us at 864-456-7127.

Quick and Complete Facts about Osteoporosis https://www.harmonyres.com/quick-and-complete-facts-about-osteoporosis https://www.harmonyres.com/quick-and-complete-facts-about-osteoporosis#respond Mon, 29 May 2017 06:36:16 +0000 http://localhost/webod1/harmonyrccob/?p=229 Continue reading ]]>

Some people may be at risk of this disease while some people are not. But one thing is for sure, we all need to know the basic and important facts about osteoporosis. Rather than giving you walls of information, Harmony Residential Care Center decided to give you quick and important facts about the disease.

What is Osteoporosis?

Osteoporosis is a disease in the bones. It makes the bones weak and prone to breaking. Those who are diagnosed with this disease often have problems with the bones in their:

  • Hip
  • Spine
  • Wrist

Who is more prone to osteoporosis?

There are different factors that lead to a person’s bone loss and eventually, osteoporosis. But there are some people more vulnerable to the disease than others. These are the following people:

  • Women

Women, especially older ones, are more prone to getting the disease than their male counterparts. This is due to the reduction of hormones due to menopause and other causes.

  • Older people

A patient will become vulnerable to loss of bone mass if he or she is older. The cases of people who acquired osteoporosis at an age younger than 50 are only rare. Most patients are often diagnosed when they reach 50 and above.

  • Smaller-framed women

Ladies who have small and thin body structure may look like supermodels now. But the problem is that when they grow old, they will be suffering from osteoporosis.

  • Caucasian and Asian people

Unlike the Africans and Hispanics, Caucasians and Asians have lower bone density. Studies show that having a low bone density is linked to bone loss and osteoporosis.

  • Blood relations

If a family member suffers from this disease, your chances of having one will increase. This is even more threatening in your case if the said family member or relative has broken a bone because of the disease.

How do we prevent osteoporosis?

There are ways you can prevent osteoporosis from ruining your retirement life. You can take these preventive measures in order to avoid the pain and inconveniences of medical treatment:

  • Eating foods rich in Calcium and Vitamin D

Calcium acts like a cement to your bones while Vitamin D encourages the absorption of Calcium to your body. Both go hand-in-hand to keeping a person’s bone density. Foods rich in these nutrients are as follows:

    • Low-fat milk
    • Yogurt
    • Cheese
  • Exercising

You do not only have to rely on food and nutrition to keep your bones healthy throughout the years. You also have to give them work by moving around, engaging in physical tasks and, of course, exercising.

Osteoporosis is one of the most undesirable diseases in the U.S. But if you have the disease and are struggling to live with it, seek refuge in our Residential Care Center in Ware Shoals Manor SC. We provide assistance and the perfect haven for our retirees. Just visit www.harmonyres.com for additional info.

3 Practical Gifts for an Aging Mother https://www.harmonyres.com/3-practical-gifts-for-an-aging-mother https://www.harmonyres.com/3-practical-gifts-for-an-aging-mother#respond Fri, 05 May 2017 06:38:40 +0000 http://localhost/webod1/harmonyrccob/?p=233 Continue reading ]]>

Mothers are the embodiment of sacrifice, love, and life. They are the ones who help bring us to this world.

May 14, 2017 is the day we remember the sacrifices and memory our mothers gave for us to reach our dreams. We put together a list that can help you decide on your perfect and practical gift for your aging momma this Mother’s Day.

  1. Secure place to retire
When you reach the age of 65, nothing may seem to change around you. But when you have passed the age of 70, all places and activities will become dangerous for you. Women who are way past their youthful years can no longer be left alone at home.

To keep them away from harm’s way, see to it that your mom retires in a place that secures her safety from any kind of accidents and incidences. Invest on assistive equipment and tools for a better navigation. It would be greatly appreciated if you set the house up and make it comfortable for an older residence.

  2. Trip to beauty shops and salon
Your mom is still the woman that she is 40 years ago. She also still has physical insecurities. Whether you notice it or not, she also still cares about what she looks. She still fancies the idea of wearing beautiful curls or sporting her favorite makeup look.

It does not hurt to pamper her and take her to the salon. However, you should make sure that this salon specializes in caring for the hair of older adults. You can also reward her with a trip to beauty shops where she can get her nails, makeup, and other feminine needs done.

  3. Dedicated caregiver
When you grow old, you are bound to experience further inconveniences. Mom may love tending the garden but may not be able to do so because of her weak knees. She may love a fancy and tidy house but could not maintain her abode because of her fear of falling down.

To prevent accidents and to help mother avoid isolation and depression, it is a wise choice to act as her caregiver. Other than that, you can also ask experienced professionals to do it in your stead.

The essence of mother’s day is to return the favor your dear parent had given you. And after all these years, now is the perfect time to do so. You already have a job and you are capable of bringing food to the table. Because your mother is not at the peak of her life, things will be different.

Give her the most suitable gift she deserves this Mother’s Day. Refer her to Harmony Residential Care Center where she can enjoy all of the amenities fit for a queen.

Visit our Residential Care Center in Ivy Grove SC or you can simply go to our website at www.harmonyres.com. Happy mother’s day and give your mom the finest retirement of her life.
